Your mind is so good at finding a good excuse that you can skip your workout (or any action that will move you closer to any goal) and you will feel fine about it. You have to gain the mental toughness to not listen to this part of your brain to get extraordinarily fit. The big challenge I have found with doing exercise at home is the ability to go easy on myself or finding an excuse to cut my workout short. It is much harder to justify cutting a workout short when you drive to a gym.

According to the book Exercise Physiology college-aged men carry 15% body fat, while older men carry around 25% body fat. Women are closer to 25% body fat at a younger age and move up to 35% as they reach age 50. I also have read elsewhere (can’t remember where) that men on average put on one pound of fat per year from the age of 35 to the age of 60 and that women put on less than one pound per year, but more in proportion to their overall weight.

I am naturally a pretty positive and upbeat person, but don’t buy into the whole positive thinking movement. The way I look at achieving goals like getting in great shape or building a successful business is that it is positive actions that matter most. Simply do the actions necessary to reach your goals, and forget how you feel. What I found is that the proper actions always lead me to feeling better anyway.

What is The 5 Pound Rule? It is simply this, never allow yourself to get over 5 pounds over your “ideal weight”. When I talk about ideal weight, I’m not talking about the weight you are at when you have busted butt in the gym for 3 months straight and have dropped every last ounce of fat. What is The 5 Pound Rule? It is simply this, never allow yourself to get over 5 pounds over your “ideal weight”. Yo-Yo Dieting is More “Mind Based” than “Diet Based”. I actually believe a lot of people become yo-yo dieters because they ignore a small problem until it adds up to a big problem. Think about it, if someone gains 5-10 pounds they still probably look great. They think things like, “I looked too skinny at that lower weight anyway”. Add 5-10 more pounds and they still look much better than when they were 50 pounds overweight.

I have spent over 20 years working out in a gym and I’m ready to spend less time commuting to a gym, waiting for equipment, etc. The bottom line is that commuting to a commercial gym can be a serious time-killer. So what would be my idea of the ultimate home gym? Choosing the best room for your home gym. There are a few things to consider here. I actually like to choose rooms with high ceilings to be able to do overhead presses.
