People don’t talk enough about height and how it relates to body composition, calories burned, muscle gains, etc. I’m a tall guy at just a hair over 6’3″, but I’m envious of shorter people at times. Height plays a large role in lean mass. Your lean mass is basically everything on your body that isn’t body fat. A taller person will naturally have bigger organs, bigger bones, more water, than a shorter person.

Is your goal to workout as much as possible or to look and feel good? You can go periods of 3-4 months on a skeleton workout schedule and maintain an amazing physique if you plan it out properly. After those 3-4 months you will need to put in more time, then you can go back to maintenance mode. I’ll talk more about how to do this in this post. You can maintain off very few official workouts.

That is true to an extent but as a trainee gets stronger, the training stress increases as well. In fact, the closer you get to your genetic potential the tougher and heavier you must lift to see a change in strength (or muscle size if you are trying to increase muscle mass). Advanced lifters have a much greater need to cycle intensity than beginners.

There is the group of organic whole foods consumers and the group of people who buy health and fitness supplements. I used to be much more familiar with the typical GNC type of supplements but didn’t know squat about things like Kombucha, Cod Liver Oil, Spirulina, etc. I think both groups have some positive things to offer and I would like to explore that in this post.

Your mind is so good at finding a suitable excuse that you can skip your workout (or any action that will move you closer to any goal) and you will feel great about it. You have to gain the mental toughness to not listen to this part of your brain to get extraordinarily fit. The big challenge I have found with doing exercise at home is the ability to go easy on myself or finding an excuse to cut my workout short. It is much harder to justify cutting a workout short when you drive to a gym.

According to the book Exercise Physiology college-aged men carry 15% body fat, while older men carry around 25% body fat. Women are closer to 25% body fat at a younger age and move up to 35% as they reach age 50. I also have read elsewhere (can’t remember where) that men on average put on one pound of fat per year from the age of 35 to the age of 60 and that women put on less than one pound per year, but more in proportion to their overall weight.

Personal Training Has Its Place In the Short Term. There are tons of knowledgeable people who can cut down your learning curve by hearing their wisdom. This is true in any endeavor, not just getting in shape. There comes a point when the "student must become the teacher" to reach the highest level. No matter what the skill... business, sports, racing, cooking, etc... the people who are super-achievers build upon a skill set taught by their teacher.

In my day to day life, I see many examples of people who are just a little overweight. In fact, I would guess that at least 1/3 of the people I know who are over the age of 50 fit into this category. I have found a few studies that show that being overweight increases the risk for several life-threatening diseases. Even if you eat well and workout and do everything you are supposed to do, things can go wrong.

I am naturally a pretty positive and upbeat person, but don’t buy into the whole positive thinking movement. The way I look at achieving goals like getting in great shape or building a successful business is that it is positive actions that matter most. Simply do the actions necessary to reach your goals, and forget how you feel. What I found is that the proper actions always lead me to feeling better anyway.
